Air Conditioning Energy Assessors Energy Assessment of Commercial Buildings Air Conditioning Systems will require inspection from 2008. Inspector training courses are available for those who wish to train as an air conditioning inspector. Training Courses for Air Conditioning Heating & Ventilation Systems (HVAC) are available from CIBSE.(Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers).

Energy Performance of Buildings (Certificates and Inspections) (England and Wales) Regulations 2007 require inspection of all air conditioning systems with rated outputs over 12 kW at intervals not greater than 5 years. The course will explain how to undertake such inspections in complex buildings and refer to CIBSE TM44 and the Occupational Standard.

It is likely that existing air-conditioning maintenance and repair companies would be best placed for application for training as an energy assessor for air conditioning systems as their personnel would already benefit from background knowledge associated with servicing, repair, and maintenance of air conditioning equipment.

Energy Assessors in this field will require training in the operation of :

  • Unitary packaged systems

  • Split packaged systems

  • Multi-split packaged systems

  • Variable refrigerant flow (VRF) systems

  • Centralised cooled air systems

  • Centralised cooled water systems

Courses
Mid-Career College Courses are available in conjunction with CIBSE, Air Conditioning Course details

As part of the energy assessment for commercial buildings an inspection of the air conditioning system will be required, this survey must be undertaken by a qualified air conditioning energy assessor. A recommendation report will also be provided after inspection providing details of improvements for existing systems as part of the survey for the production of an EPC (Energy Performance Certificate).

In detail, the course will study the following areas of the survey and reporting procedure, some of these details may be the subject of amendment when the National Occupational Standards (NOC) have been finalised.

Inspection of packaged cooling systems

Learning Courses have been developed to encompass inspection of air conditioning controls and equipment in conjunction with commercial buildings energy assessment, which requires specialist training for surveying commercial property. For further information please refer to SAP Assessors & SBEM Assessors.

The training courses for air conditioning equipment will commence early in 2008, as well as CIBSE other training course providers will be tailoring courses for Commercial HVAC Industrial Air Conditioning Systems. Further Government approved training course providers for air conditioning systems inspection are available at Air Conditioning Energy Assessor Training

The requirement has been brought about by the introduction of the EU EPBD directive for the issue of Energy Performance Certificates for Commercial Buildings. For those considering training in the field of domestic energy assessment please refer to Domestic Energy Assessor Training.

Air Conditioning Inspection together with inspection of commercial boiler and heating systems for commercial premises is required in conjunction with building energy ratings via energy assessment assessors.
